Well loved Physician and Healer, Dr. H. Dean Shull, Jr., passed away March 26, 2015, due to acute mesenteric ischemia which led to cardiac arrest. He was 76 years old.

Born June 6, 1938, in Johnson City, Tennessee, he was predeceased by his father Harry Dean Shull, Sr., mother Elizabeth Harrington Shull. He is survived by his loving wife Judith, son Dean Shull III, daughter Mary Ann Shull Koon and husband Dr. James E. Koon, brother Fredrick Harrington Shull, stepdaughter Angela Clinebell and husband Shaun Clinebell, granddaughters Cassie and Paige Clinebell, and cousin...

Born June 6, 1938, in Johnson City, Tennessee, he was predeceased by his father Harry Dean Shull, Sr., mother Elizabeth Harrington Shull. He is survived by his loving wife Judith, son Dean Shull III, daughter Mary Ann Shull Koon and husband Dr. James E. Koon, brother Fredrick Harrington Shull, stepdaughter Angela Clinebell and husband Shaun Clinebell, granddaughters Cassie and Paige Clinebell, and cousin Judy Webber and family.

Dr. Shull graduated from Indiana University in Indianapolis, IN where he was an active member in Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He continued his education at the Indiana University School of Medicine in Bloomington, IN, where he had his Doctor of Medicine degree conferred in 1964. He interned as a Medical Doctor at Lakeland General Hospital, now Lakeland Regional Memorial Hospital. He completed his residency in Psychiatry at Milwaukee County Hospital. He served as a Doctor and Captain in the U.S. Army based in Korea during Vietnam, where he discovered his calling and true love of Psychotherapy.

Dr. Shull opened his private Psychiatric practice in Winter Haven April 15, 1971, continuing to practice for 40 years. He was on staff at Winter Haven Hospital for 35 years. After retiring from private practice he became a Locum Tenens Physician traveling all over the United States.

Dr. Shull lived a full and compassionate life serving in many organizations. He was an Ordained Elder and Deacon at First Presbyterian Church. He was past President of the Rotary Club of Winter Haven, twice past President of the Polk County Medical Association, Past Medical Director of the Winter Haven Hospital Psychiatric Subsection. A life member of the American Medical Association, the Florida Medical Association, the American Psychiatric Association, and the American Academy of Psychiatry and Law. He also served as past President of the Florida Bromeliad Society, the Florida Rare Palm Society, the Political Memorabilia Society, and the Polk County Democratic Party.

In addition to his love of Psychiatry, he loved US History with a special interest in the Presidents. His love for adventure took him to many places throughout the world. His hobbies included collecting political memorabilia, antiques, bromeliads, rare palms, and artifacts from his travels. He was an avid reader, loved watching baseball and attending Spring Training games were he could yell at millionaires. He became a fan of Florida State Football while his children attended Florida State University. He had an adventurous soul, always taking the road less traveled. He practiced meditation and used alternative healing methods for his patients. He had a genuine interest in people, never met a stranger, and always had a story to tell. He was a very independent thinker and was not afraid to support the opposing view. He truly loved his life.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Winter Haven, located at 637 6th St., NW, at 3:30 PM on Sunday, March 29, 2015.
